How much wood do I need to build a bookcase?
I'm making a bookcase that's 2 ft wide and 3 feet tall for my carpentry class and my teacher says we need a project plan that includes all the material and prices. Well I know how many nails and what tools I need but I don't know how to find out how much wood and how much it'll cost? I'm on The Home Depot site but I still can't figure it out. I want wood that's not crappy but not something too expensive.
Decide how many shelves and the width of the shelf. Lets say you want three shelves. !2" wide. Thats 6' for the shelf and 6' for the sides. Total 12' of 1" x 12" board. Do you want a back on it ? That will be 2' x 3' of 1/2" plywood. I would recommend using a router and cutting into the sides 1/2 the thickness for a groove for the lower 2 shelves. Use wood glue in the joint and wood screws instead of nails. Much stronger. The top shelf should also be glued and wood screws rather than nails. As far as the wood goes you can use a cheaper clear pine and stain to the color you want or you can use oak which is a bit more expensive but much better looking. You can counter sink the screws and buy wood plugs for the holes. Glue the plug in and then trim off any excess or just leave the whole plug in. Whichever you like. Good luck.
