Are Orcs The Best Fantasy Monster Ever?
The fantasy genre is filled with archetypal monsters who, more often than not, go against the interests of the good guys (there are, of course, some exceptions). The more "popular" (I use the word tentatively) monsters have spread to many different mediums beyond their literary (often Tolkienian) origins, such as films and video games; I bet an upcoming 3DS or Kinect title will have them at some point. If you're eagerly awaiting the day when your Nintendo 3DS requires the yelling of "WAAAGH" in game (or the other way around) then do see below; being green has never been easier.
Trolls
Trolls became separate from the evil giants of Norse mythology thanks to added press from Scandinavian folklore. Dwelling in isolated places such as caves and mountains (or bridges, if they take their fancy), trolls are generally dumb but large, strong and sometimes strangely agile. They are incredibly tough (with stone skin or regenerative powers, particularly in Dungeons & Dragons), trolls usually have an unfortunate reputation for eating human flesh (or indeed any; they're not really that picky). Ogres, who are generally large, greedy and hairy, are often depicted in a similar way to trolls.
Orcs
Big, green and usually mean. Orcs are generally powerful warriors who enjoy fighting. Tolkien first began using this name for them, apparently desiring to ultimately change the spelling to "ork" (which you may have seen in Warhammer). In both World of Warcraft and Dungeons & Dragons players can even play as orcs. Goblins could be said to be like smaller, weaker (and sometimes more mischievous) orcs.
Kobolds
Originally a spirit straight out of Germanic myth, today kobolds are usually small weak draconic creatures. In Dungeons & Dragons they tend to populate only low level dungeons, generally making them a running joke among the community.
