The Art Deco Design Diamond Ring
For those looking for a bit of history in their engagement rings, a good option is art deco engagement rings. These rings were made in the period between 1920 and 1930. They were usually mounted with emeralds, rubies and sapphires, which were either genuine and synthetic, with the styles of the cuts said to be influenced by the art styles of the Russian Ballet, King Tut, the Paris Expo and Cubism.
History of Art Deco Engagement Rings
Art deco is a word derived from the L'Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes (Exposition of Decorative Arts and Modern Manufactures) which was held in Paris in 1925. It rose to popularity in the years between WWI and WWII and represented the sophistication of the era that was the Roaring Twenties.
The Art deco design is characterized by its stylized geometric shapes and the use of symmetry. It also uses bold colors in its stones, from the bright red of the ruby to the deep green of the emerald. However, most Art Deco engagement rings make practical use of black and white as well as platinum as the base metal for its stones. The platinum combines well with the diamonds and crystals that were used extensively during the 30's.
The Art Deco design also owes much to the flowing curves and the lines of the earlier Art Noveau and Edwardian periods to compliment the dramatic geometric shapes. These shapes ultimately opened the way for the modern cuts such as the emerald cut and the marquise.
