Should symbols of past regimes be removed?
Estonia's president vetoed a law passed by parliament on Thursday to remove a Soviet-era Red Army monument from the capital Tallinn, a plan which had sparked strong Russian criticism. Parliament had given final approval to a bill requiring the government to move the bronze statue of a Red Army soldier to a cemetery. Russia said such a move would be 'an act of blasphemy'. Many Estonians see the monument as a symbol of 50 years of Soviet occupation.
Don't limit your question to other countries.
How about in the United States.
Arcata, Ca. has a statue of President William McKinley in their city park. There was a movement a few years ago to remove the statue. He no longer represents their values. Do you think it should be removed?
How about statuary hall in the U.S. capitol? It's full of statues of past regimes. They have two statues from each state and the states have the right to replace any statue they choose. So far only Kansas has replaced one. They took out George Washington Glick and replaced him with Dwight Eisenhower.
There are probably historic monuments near where you live. Do you think some of them should be torn down and removed?
I have often wondered why we have allowed scoundrels to erect monuments of themselves and name cities after themselves.
Look at Douglas, Arizona for example. It was named after a mining president who had the striking miners rounded up by the sheriff and put on freight trains and taken out an dumped in the desert. Douglas, got rich, his grandson entered politics as a congressman.
Another town in Arizona is called SnowFlake. It was named after the town founders, Snow and Flake. Jeff Flake, is a current Arizona Congressman.
The people of Douglas, AZ., which is right on the border with Mexico, cannot prefer the name of Douglas over its former name, Aqua Prietta (black water). Why not organize initiatives in cities and towns all across america to remove the names and monuments of those who we no longer honor or respect?
As for not wanting to forget history, I envision an artificial reef of discredited presidential statues or a giant scrap heap where people could come and view all the scoundrels statues at once.
