Few questions about my GSD puppy?
We have a 5/6-month old German Shepherd puppy and I want to resolve two issues with him: begging and eating poop. Can anyone please give me some pointers? Every time someone eats in this house, he sits there like a statue and will often whine and bark for us to give him food; we don't normally give him table scraps but if he's being REALLY annoying, one little piece of crust or whatever is all he gets. Whenever I try to shoo him away, he just comes back and begs some more. Also, he just recently started eating poop, something he never used to do when we first got him. Even though he's lost a good amount of his baby teeth, he's still in that stage where EVERYTHING new he sees, goes in his mouth. I would especially like to break him from the latter. Thanks.
Well, you already screwed up with the begging thing. You DID give him one little piece of crust because YOU gave in to his begging. So, in other words, you rewarded him for the behavior that you are trying to avoid. That has got to stop. Why not just put him his crate while you are eating, and the same thing goes for chewing on stuff around the house. I understand that you can't put everything away, but you can sure pick up things so there isn't so much stuff FOR him to put in his mouth. When he can't be watched, crate him, for his OWN safety. He will stop eating the poop when you clean it up immediately after he goes, so he can't eat it. This is a terrible habit to break, but it can be done. Just don't let him continue to do it by eliminating the problem to begin with.
