Villa Poggio Imperiale - Florence

Villa di Poggio Imperiale is located on the hill of Arcetri in Florence. Originally it was a villa called Villa di Poggio Baroncelli, even if today is the Medici villa looking less faithful to the original. Poggio Baroncelli name derives from the first owner of the villa, which was sold to Salviati family in 1548. The only part remaining of the ancient Villa di Poggio Baroncelli is the square courtyard that is encountered soon after the entrance, original nucleus of the villa. Around the bright arched openings, closed by windows, extending four corridors decorated with antique busts placed in frames, scrolls and niches eighteenth century. This significant collection of sculpture was brought to Florence by Vittoria della Rovere, the last heir of the Dukes of Urbino.On the first floor the most important room is the spectacular Ballroom, built between 1776 and 1783 and decorated with stucco predominantly white. In the adjacent district of China are the four rooms decorated to the 1775 with hand-painted Chinese wallpaper, made from rolls of Canton laboratories specializing in production for export, then very flourishing fashion of chinoiserie in Europe.
Chinese paintings, probably from the same source as those of the Villa, were donated by the Grand Duke Peter Leopold to his sister Maria Carolina of Habsburg-Lorraine, which placed them in the Villa Favorita in Resina. From here they were then taken part in Palermo and are now housed in the Royal Palace and the Chinese house.
