Modern Art: History & Expression
Modern art was a movement by modern artistes that allowed them to explore new ways, fresh ideas, materials and functions of art. . It is important to understand how modern art/contemporary art reached the present state in order to fully appreciate today’s art. Originating roughly during the 1860s, the idea has recently evolved towards abstraction and abstract wall art as a recent characteristic of modern art. Modern sculpture and architecture also originated during the 1900s, however, modern paintings and canvas art has been located much earlier.
A popular Art Historian Sir Harvard Arnason once commented, “"Each of these dates has significance for the development of modern art, but none categorically marks a completely new beginning ... A gradual metamorphosis took place in the course of a hundred years.”
Before the World war I, in the 20th century we had Cubism, Expressionism, Fauvism as popular art forms, which became little known after the war. It was the period between 1950s and 1960s that a new art form Abstract Expressionism took birth. We also witnessed art evolution with color field painting, Pop art, Hard-edge painting, Surrealism, Minimal art, and other movements.
During the 1970s there was wide criticism on new art like media and video art, also artists liked to experiment with different technological means as the new art form. It was during the 1980s and 1990s that painting was revived with neo-expressionism and figurative painting. There is also a Museum dedicated to modern art called the MOMA (The Museum of Modern Art) in New York. It has been called one of the most important museums of modern art in the world. The artists featured at the museum include Vincent van Gogh, Jackson Pollack, Andy Warhol, and Robert Indiana.

From times when modern art was much criticized to a liberal and more acceptable medium, modern art movement has its own identity from great influences such as Cubism, Surrealism, abstract art and pop art.
