Khajuraho: A Land of Beautiful Erotic Sculptures
Kahjuraho is an indistinguishable part of Incredible India which is known throughout the world for its medieval Hindu and Jain temples, famous for their erotic sculptures. This temple town of India is situated in Chhatarpur District of Madhya Pradesh State. The groups of stone sculpted structures make it among the seven wonders of India which is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Etymologically Khajuraho is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘kharjur' meaning date palm. Out of the 85 original temples, only 20 are left. These well sculpted temples are categorized into three geographical groups Eastern, Western and Southern. Western Group of Temples:
Some of the most famous temples of Khajuraho are situated in this region. The popular temples of this region are:
Lakhmana Temple: is the oldest and most well sculpted temple of Khajuraho which is dedicated to the trinity of Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu with his consort Lakshmi. This temple is among the finest example of human arts and sculptures which make it elegant.
Kandariya Mahadeo Temple: is renowned for its architectural pattern of symmetrical lines rising up to the height of 30 meters. Three bands of this temple adorned with superb sculptures cover entire range of Khajuraho sculptures. The intricate carvings and delicate sculptures make it a grand temple of Khajuraho.
The other popular temples of this region are Chaunsat Yogini, Devi Jagdamba Temple, Matanageswara Temple and Chitragupta Temple.
Eastern Group of Temples:
Parsvanath Temple: is the largest and most well sculpted temple of the eastern region which was built in 950-70 AD during Dhanga's reign. The outer wall of this temple is known for its perforated windows which showcase best of human arts and imaginations. The most enchanting attraction of this temple is the pair of celestial nymph (apsaras) hanging from the central pendant of the porch.
Ghantai Temple: is the Jain temple which is famous for its frescoes depicting 16 dreams of Mahavira's mother and a Jain goddess on a winged Garuda.
Some other well known temples of this region are Hanuman Temple, Javari Temple, Vamana Temple, Adinath Temple and Brahma Temple.
Southern Group of Temples:
Dulhadev Temple: is dedicated to the Lord Shiva. This is among the most visited temples of this region which is famous for its ornamented and sculpted figures of celestial nymph.
Chattarbhuj Temple or the Jatkari Temple: This temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in the Chaturbhuja (four-armed) incarnation. It is famous for its constructions, decorations and architectural pattern.
