Finding Out About One of Spain’s National Masters—Diego Velasquez

So many of Spain’s great masters came about and became famous during its Golden Age and on this era, most Spanish painters were able to make their mark in different selections of art forms all over the world. It is also during that era when one painter named Diego Velasquez became most popular and regarded as the most sought after and highly respected master. This master is truly one of a kind in terms of style and paintings; he is a realist painter and his vision in his art is something that was not yet popular during his time.
Diego Velasquez’s family was a minor nobility during their generation; he was born on June 5, 1599 and was the first born in the family with five younger siblings. He displayed some talent in drawing and at the age of eleven, he was granted an apprenticeship in the studio of the great Francisco Pacheco who trained him and helped him hone his skills as a painter. He later married the daughter of Francisco Pacheco and made a living through his paintings, and because of his greatness in painting he was able to earn enough money to buy a good house and another house to be rent out.
Diego Velasquez continued with his paintings and made a lot of great paintings that made him popular throughout the country and in different parts of the world. Among his famous paintings is Surrender of Breda which he painted when he met Marques de Spinola; the painting signifies the victory of Spinola and it was said that Spinola was dazed and in awe when he saw the painting and cannot believe how exceptional Velasquez’ talent is to express emotion through realism in his portraits. Another masterpiece, and probably the most popular one credited to his name, is The Maids in Honour or Las Meninas; amazingly, he painted himself inside the piece, quietly working on a canvas at the background.
There is plenty to be told on the life and works of Diego Velasquez, these are only but a few of his works and how great he is as a painter and how he became Spain’s most celebrated artist.
