Medical Careers Are Not Simply For Men Anymore
American women are joining the medical profession in ever greater numbers, an event that is sure to have an impact on both the education and practice of medicine. For many years there have been equal numbers of men and women being accepted by medical schools. Lately though, the number of women applying for medical school has increased dramatically. One reason for the sudden increased interest is the changed view in society about what jobs are considered to be "women's work". It's not just the medical field that's seeing a large influx of women. Law schools and engineering schools are enjoying many more female applicants than in past years. As more women desire to enter the profession, the pressure on the medical schools to accept women is also increased. Antidiscrimination laws have also opened up many traditionally male areas of study, though enforcement of the laws often takes many years and can sometimes be spotty.
Recent data is not available on the number of females that leave medical programs without finishing. The data that has been recorded in previous years showed more women dropping out than men, but it was mostly for non-academic reasons. When you talk to women currently practicing in the medical field, they say that the dropout rates between men and women are just about equal, in large part because there are more women and so the pressure women feel can be more easily shared and dealt with. In fact, as more women enter the medical field they find themselves able to exert more force and can drive changes regarding discriminatory behavior.
For instance, one instructor decided to tell his mostly male class a joke to start the day off. He asked his students which word didn't belong in this series - rug, egg, woman, and sex, and gave the answer as sex, because you can't beat sex. Even though this isn't half as bad as some of the things women were putting up with on an everyday basis in the hallway of schools, it is still bad enough to keep women from being respected. These things that were once the norm - nude lady pics and pinup pics in lecture slides and textbooks - will become a thing of the past soon enough. Not only are these women hearing distasteful jokes on the regular, there are rules in place that don't make a bit of sense, for example; a female student reported that she was unable to witness the complete physical examination of a male patient because he would be completely nude and she would be able to see his genitalia. Meanwhile her husband, another student, was allowed to complete a pelvic examination on a woman patient. There was also the interview with admissions in which the interviewer was almost always a man and asked questions about personal life, like plans for marriage and family. Additional factors that serve to hinder female med students are the lack of females employed by universities on staff since these positions are not keeping up with the rise in female students, the accepted notion that after females get their licenses, they might decide not to go into the medical field after all, and the exclusion of females in certain practices, such as surgery.
When the interview question about marriage and career is asked, many women find themselves being denied admission if they do not give the right answer. This is another issue that many women find highly objectionable. Certain men who are asking the questions use the female's answer against her, no matter which way she answers. If the woman answers that she will have day care for her children, the interviewer claims she should be home with them rather than at work being a doctor. If a female indicates that she plans to have kids, the questioner will tell her he doesn't believe she is dedicated to the medical field.
It has been said that female doctors are much more sensitive than their male counterparts after interviews. But this is chalked up to being another stereotype of women. One medical student who is a female states to have seen some very insensitive women and likewise some extremely sensitive men in her time, but it was more of a personality trait and less of a biological one.
One dean from a renowned medical school states that women possess some things that are desired in the medical field more so than some men. When women are growing up it is more likely that they are taught to be more sensitive and open to other people's needs, which is a plus in modern medicine. Even though aggression is mostly associated with negativity, it can also be a positive thing in the right settings.
