The Nude as Protest: 8 Notable Demonstrations
The nude protest has been used for political, personal and even work related issues. The causes can be very diverse; from global warming to the right to be naked. The nude in public areas has always surprised the general public in the street and continues to do so.
With catchy slogans like ‘Nudes not nukes' and ‘breast not bombs', a nude protester be it male or female can have many reasons and here are just a few of the many notable examples;
Political Protests
1. The recent report of a naked woman walking across the London Tate Modern's public exhibition ‘Sunflower Seed Landscape' is an example of raising the profile for a specific issue. In this instance, she was giving her support to the detained Chinese artists Ai Weimei.
2. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has a wide brief and a long history of using either nudity or semi nude as a form of protest in order to raise the profile of their causes around the world. Also PETA is said to be the cause celebre, as many famous people have stripped naked for them, causes such as ‘Wear your own skin', ‘Bear hugs not Bear caps' and ‘I'd rather go naked than wear fur' have seen celebrities, supermodels and artists such as Pamela Anderson, Naomi Campbell and Joss Stone strip to protest.
3. Yoko Ono's 1960's (and recently repeated) performance art piece of ‘Cut Pieces', had the audience come up to the front of the stage and cut bits off from her clothing as she sat there until she was naked. This was a protest against human suffering.
4. Spencer Tunik (the grand dame of mass nudity) photographed over 600 nudists on an alpine glacier to highlight the problems of global warming.
5. Nude cycling. This has become a past time in many cities throughout the world as hoards of (semi) naked men and women cycle for mainly environmental causes on World Naked Bike Ride (aka international nude cycling, Cyclonudista Mundial) day.
Personal and Work Related Protests
1. Stephen Gough, a serial British nudist, consistently challenges authority over its attitude to the human body. His epic 800 mile Land's End to John O'Groat's nude walk took seven months due to him being continually arrested for the ‘breach of the peace'.
2. In 2006, in La Coruna, Spain 100 fireman stripped off in protests over pay and training.
3. More pay problems led to the Spanish flight attendants' producing their own nude protest calendar. They had been without wages for nine months from the grounded Spanish airline Air Comet.
Nudity will always draw the media and the public's interest while we continue to think it is shocking and unusual. For this reason it has been the perfect vehicle for protests, because you may think it's just idle titillation but you will remember the reason why they were there.
