Does worshiping the virgin Mary or Jesus break the second Commandment in the Bible?
Since the virgin Mary and Jesus could be described as idols, does that break the Commandment that says it is a sin to worship an idol?
Mary was a mortal human who needed a Savior. So it would be wrong to worship her as God. She was highly favored and blessed among women. (Lk 1:28, 42)
Jesus on the other hand was "the Word made flesh".
Jn 1:1 -- In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and THE WORD WAS GOD. ... 14 And THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Here is a very enlightening exchange between the then recently resurrected Jesus and one of his disciples. In it you'll see that Thomas worshipped Him as God. If he had been wrongfully doing so, Jesus would surely have corrected Thomas.
Jn 20:26 -- And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. 27 Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. 28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. 29 Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
But what did Jesus say?
Since Jesus IS the Word, in Isaiah, He said He is the Everlasting Father, and God Himself!
Isa 9:6 -- For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
And in the flesh, He said,
Jn 10:30 -- I and my Father are one. [the same, indivisible, EQUAL! and the Jews understood him to mean it this way, because they then attempted to stone Him.]
