Visit the Famed Merlion Statue
The Merlion Statue is among Singapore's leading tourist attractions as well as a prestigious monument that represents the island's history. The statue known as the Merlion is an imaginary creature that resembles a fish with its body and a lion with its head. The statue is still used as the famed mascot of Singapore. The Merlion was built as a national icon in the year 1972 and it is situated at the focal point of the Merlion Park River.
The original statue of the Merlion was designed by Kwan Sai Kheong and built by the renowned craftsman Lim Nang Seng. The statue stands at 8.6 metres and weighs over 40 tons; it further boasts unique illustrations depicted on its architecture and a water fountain that flows out of the statue's mouth. Apart from the pair of statues situated adjacent to the Merlion Park River there are three other Merlions located around the city, all of which are recognized by the Singapore Tourist Board. These prestigious sculptures can be seen at Sentosa Island, the Tourism Court in Grange Road and Faber Point.
The largest of these five statues is the one built in Sentosa Island. This replica of the Merlion stands at 37 metres. The statue also serves as a viewing deck and is among the great attractions in Singapore. Sightseers can enjoy a breathtaking light display in the evenings at the Park River, the river and its patio illuminated with thousands of neon bulbs. The Merlion statues found at Faber Point and Grange Road are both three metres in height and constructed using glazed polymarble. The Merlion has also become a prestigious icon as it is featured in many types of art forms and popular culture.
