Jade -The Chinese Royal Gemstone
Jade is a semi precious stone.”Piedra de ijada”, a Spanish phrase, is the origin of the name “Jade”.Jade is believed to cure kidney and loin related disases, and hence the name.Infact, the term “nephrite” in relation to kidneys, is derieved from the name of one of the types of jade, that was used to cure kidney ailments.Jade is usually green in color.In certain countries, jade is also known as Greenstone.Jade is called “yu” by the Chinese, which means, royal stone.Though it is primarily found in green color, jade of creamy white, black, gray, orange, yellow, lavender, mauve-pink and emerald green colors are also found.
Chemically, we find 2 varieties of jade.One of them is known as nephrite and the other is called jadeite.When it comes to hardness, appearance, etc; both are nearly alike.However, they are different when it comes to chemical composition.Nephrite is formed from chemicals of calcium, magnesium and iron whereas, jadeite is formed from chemcials of sodium and aluminium.Nephrite usually has a brilliant green color.Jadeite is more expensive as it is rarer than nephrite.After being polished, nephrite develops a resin like surface, whereas, jadeite develops a mirror like shine on its surface.
China, New Zealand, Russia, Cananda, Gautemala and the Swiss Alps have considerable deposits of jade.Best quality of jade stones come from Burma.The final quality and color of a raw jade piece can be known only after processing and cutting; hence jade traders need to be careful when buying unprocessed jade.It is near impossible to predict the end product when buying raw jade.It is only after the complete processing is done that the final quality and luster of the stone become visible.
Carbonundum and diamond powder are used to process raw jade.Quartz, garnet sand, bamboo or ground jade can be used to work raw jade, as the hardness of jade varies between 5.0 to 7.0 Mohs hardness.It was used in the olden days as a material for making weapons and tools.Soon it made its use felt in the field of art and culture with many sculptures and cult figures being carved in jade.
The Chinese royal family has been particularly partial to the use of Jade in jewelry and other royal finery.In the ancient Americas, the tribal’s would value jade higher than gold.Egypt sees jade as a stone of love.Regardless of the civilization, jade is perceived as a protective stone.Apart from this, in current times, Jade is used as a precious stone for engraving it in different forms of jewellery, thus providing the jewels with the contrasting tints.
