Making a new dog get a long with my older dog?
We have had my dog Jade for a little over 3 years now. She's a beagle mix. She is the best dog I have ever owned, is well behaved and always listens. We have never had any problems with her. Unfortunately, we had to take in an 8 month old Beagle puppy Booker, because his family was going to give him to the pound. Naturally, I couldnt let this happen, but we are going a little crazy trying to make them get along. We have tried walks with them, feeding them together, and many other things. They bark and growl at each other, bite, and Booker won't ever leave her alone. What can we do to make them get a long? Thanks in advance!
Booker is trying to be dominant over Jade. The gender roles can be a factor, but what you need to do is show that you are the dominant one over them two.
The best thing to do is to bring Booker and perhaps Jade to a training class, especially since Booker is young. Through training, it can help you can your dominance over them, and can teach Booker some manners. A private trainer (which is more costly than group training) can help solve the conflict between the two dogs.
Also, if Booker is not already neutered, I would consider neutering him. For most-if not all- male dogs, neutering helps lower their aggression levels (but be sure that they can/will still be aggressive).
Also, you need to think of the dogs as people; some people get along with others, while some people don't get along with certain or many people. Like people, dog's have personalities that can clash with other dogs. You CAN'T force people or dogs to like each other, however, you CAN teach people and dogs to have manners and how to behave properly when dealing with others that they don't like.
