Understanding The Chinese Astrology Calendar
Western astrology is pretty familiar to most people today. Various forms of astrology are used world-wide and have been used for centuries by many different cultures. The Chinese astrology calendar is one that is still referred to, along with the western one. Both systems employee the use of twelve signs and each sign is accompanied by a planet. Using these systems people try to anticipate future happenings. They also use it as a way to uncover things about themselves that they may not already be aware of. Though there are many differences in these systems both are used to discover pretty much the same things.
According to Chinese lore, insight into the five elements was brought to humans by the spirits belonging to the five planets, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Mars, and Mercury. In western astrology, elements are also assigned to these planets. The elements in Chinese astrology often mirror those in western astrology, only in an opposite way. Such as the element of water in Chinese astrology being mirrored by air in western astrology.
There are twelve aspects to both wheels, but in western astrology each aspect governs a specific month according to Gregorian Calendar, and changes month to month. The symbols represented in the Chinese Calendar change every year and every twelve years the cycle starts over, beginning with the rat.
Many stories of how these animals came to be on the Chinese Zodiac, are told by different people. The basic story is that of a god who told all the animals there was going to be a race, and the twelve winners were to be given medals and a special place on the calendar. The rat and the cat asked the ox if they could catch a ride on his back, due to their lack of swimming skills. He said okay and they climbed on. During the swim over the rat became very eager to win and knocked the cat into the water. When the ox was almost to the shore the rat jumped off and claimed first place, and the ox graciously accepted second place, but made it known to the rat that it's actions were not appreciated.
By following Chinese astrology one's destiny is said to be determined by the setting of the planets during one's birth. The moon, sun and comets that may be present at that time are also used in determining one's fate. There are many myths and legends surrounding the stars, that belong to this system of astrology.
Knowing the future, or at least being given an idea of what the future holds, is a soothing thought for a lot of people. Chinese astrology appears, in ways, to be much more complicated than the western version, but but ways serve the same purpose. Both ways are also enjoyed by a variety of believers in astrology.
The Chinese astrology calendar focuses on fate, probable fates and ways to change or encourage that fate. Western astrology is geared toward psychology and is more vague, whereas the Chinese way is more absolute and balanced. Everything has an opposite, male and female, light and dark, positive and negative. Each of these things are balanced by it's opposite.
