I need some retaining wall advice.?
I am preparing to do my eagle project and I want to make a retaining wall. the thing is i want to use pressure treated wood. The other thing is that the retaining wall is next to a creek. will the chemicals from the wood go into the creek? should i worry about this? is there an alternative?
Sounds like you are doing some streambank restoration. If so, I would recommend using more natural types of products like rocks, stumps, etc. In some cases, I have seen rock 'cages' put in place.
Willows trees are friends to the streambank and may be 'sacrificed' for the good of the larger area. Use sections of mature trees to lay down along the bends of the creek in order to protect the erosion caused during the rainy seasons. These sections will eventually sprout roots and shoots that will increase the stabilization while also filtering and taking-up nutrients thus creating cleaner water, less sendiment, and more condusive to habitat (frogs, fish, plants, etc.). Willow 'poles' can be aslo be cut (4-6' sections) and planted into the bank- eventually becoming mature trees. You may want to also plant some riparian types of plants that will also add to the diversity (and stabilization) of the ecosystem (grasses, sedges, etc.)
Most pressure-treated wood does have harmful bi-products that may do more damage than good. Make sure you take before-and-after pictures so you show what you did to improve the area.
