Is it okay to paint on plaster with Tempera paint?
I have a sculpture I carved out of dried white plaster, and I would like to paint it. I have a lot of tempera paint and I know it would absorb into the plaster nicely but I'm wondering if it is safe to do so... will the plaster possibly fall apart? And does anyone know what type of paint is best to use on plaster?
No, it will not be fine. Tempera and plaster can be used together to paint but the plaster must be wet, this is called Fresco painting. If you paint over the dry plaster, the paint will dry and peel/crack off. You have to first prepare the surface of the plaster with an agent that will bond to the plaster, and that will act as a ground, I'm not sure if gesso will work, but you can try it. Go to a hardware store, like Home Depot, and ask them for a product that will prime your plaster, possibly something simple like acrylic primer for outdoor painting.
