Why You Need To Put Nakhon Si Thammarat Thailand In Your Travel Plans
Nakhon Si Thammarat is a town in south eastern Thailand and borders Malaysia’s East Coast. Nakhon Si Thammarat is an active border town having a flourishing cross-border trade in timber, carvings and farm produce. Nakhon Si Thammarat has a number of inhabitants of around 100,000 and shares its town with nearby provinces.
Nakhon Si Thammarat is considered the oldest municipality in Southern Thailand and was previously an area of the Trambralinga province of Southen China. Present day inhabitants are dark-skinned showing that the fair skinned Chinese abandoned the region hundreds of years ago. At one point this was one of the dominant states in South East Asia and rivaled the Kyhmer kingdom of Angkor in numbers and political influence.
Things To See:
Wat Pra – Wat pra is a famous temple in Nakhon Si Thammarat and is recognized as the most important temple in southern Thailand. Many novice and senior monks pilgrimage in this temple to give their respects to Lord Buddha. It really is believed that Buddha himself went to this area to give sermons to the villagers. This temple was featured on the currently defunct 25 statang coin.
The City Wall – It is another attraction for visitors curious about ancient architecture. This wall was used to protect the town from Malay and Burmese intruders during the late 17th century – but no expense was spared in its elaborate and sturdy construction.
The Museum – Located on Rachadamnoen Road, Nakhon Si Thammarat museum is famous for it’s bronze drums and Vietnamese Cultural sections. This museum is often ignored by tourists to Nakhon Si Thammarat.
Getting There
Get an express train from central Bangkok departing mondays to fridays at 5:50 PM and 7:15 PM. Services during the weekend are irregular.
