When & how to trim Boxwoods, Ivy, Azalias, etc.?
Ok, I just rented this house and it has a ton of Azalias, Ivy growing outward further than the 2 1/2 that it should be, boxwood bushes and mulberry bushes all around the whole house. They are all growing like crazy, are too big and are growing out-of-hand. When should each of these types of bushes, plants be trimmed? and how should each of them be trimmed and what should be used? ------ So far, my Brother says he has this power trimmer, but I know that the boxwood bush/tree would probably look better getting clipped/trimmed by hand using a simple clipper. My landlord lives right next door to me, ge is home alot and I want to be able to do this at least half right, lol.
I meant to say the Ivy plants are growing, along the ground, outward, farther then the 2 and 1/2 feet that they should be. ----- And,... I live in central New Jersey and the date this was written on is: May 23, 2008.
Ivy can be rimmed most anytime or even mowed off if it is on the lawn. It will generally branch just behind the cut. Boxwood can be trimmed and shaped nicely or bottom should be clipped wider than top so it will get some light. Hedge clippers work best for this. Azaleas should be trimmed just above a leaf nod (where leaf attaches to stem) only after spring flowering. Mulberries would be trimmed basically the same as Azaleas only on larger scale, limbs crossing should come off and suckers cut off and tree shaped. Around here I would just eliminate the Mulberries.
