Ceiling Fixes - Suspended Systems

Putting in a suspended ceiling as a component of a basement remodel is a popular remodeling choice. They are also a great choice when dealing with a ceiling that is visually off putting, or one that has been repaired. If you are planning to upgrade your ceiling on your own, picking a suspended ceiling is a good idea. Installing a suspended ceiling system is easy enough for a homeowner to do in just a weekend.

Choosing the Ceiling System

With all of the ceiling panel types available on the market today, there is one to fit every remodeling project. While some of these are affordable, there are also some systems that, although more expensive, are really well designed and easy to install. Ultimately, you need to consider your budget to make sure that you leave enough money for finishing decor like modern wall clock or bronze wall plaques, as well as the visual effect you are trying to create in the room. Measure your room prior to buying a panel ceiling system. As you figure out the square footage of your ceiling you will also want to determine the amount of ceiling tiles that will be required to complete the job. To find the amount of tiles you will need divide your total area by the area of a single tile. This calculation will tell you the number of full ceiling panels that are necessary for the job. Then, take whatever length and width sizes are left over, and divide them by two, to calculate how many smaller partial panels you will use on each side. It is probably a good idea to purchase at least a few extra panels to be sure that you do not run out.

Arranging the Wall Molding

Begin by measuring the walls for the drop ceiling installation. Make sure to allow at least six inches as you measure if you are also adding fluorescent lighting fixtures in your ceiling. You can shrink this measurement to four inches if you are not adding lighting panels, but never leave less than four inches, or you won't have enough room to put in the panels. It is important to leave enough clearance between the perimeter molding and the ceiling to have room to maneuver your ceiling panels properly into place.  Nail the perimeter molding in place, keeping it level around the room.

Main Beams and Cross Tees

Next, you will be installing the main beams. To keep yourself centered, snap a chalk line about every four feet across the entire room. Next put in the hanger wire screws at four foot intervals along the chalk line. The next step is to, twist the wire around each of the screw hangers. As you install the wire, make sure that it is stretched tightly between the screw hangers. All of the main tees are put together through this only wire. Using a level to keep the main tees straight, you can now add them. After installing the main tees plan to slide on the cross tees. Again, ensure to keep them level so that your ceiling remains straight.

Adding the Panels

Once all the tees and cross tees are suspended, you simply need to put the ceiling panels in place, use some home wall art, and install your fluorescent lighting panels if desired.
